The government has launched a countrywide combing operation starting today in response to the deteriorating law and order situation across various parts of Bangladesh.
“All identified criminals will be brought to justice during this drive,” said Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, speaking after an advisory council meeting on law and order held at the Secretariat.
“A special operation has been initiated considering the overall security challenges to apprehend criminals,” he added.
The Home Adviser emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring fair trials and exemplary punishment for those involved in recent violent incidents, including the brutal murder at Old Dhaka’s Mitford area last Wednesday.
“Addressing the Mitford murder case is our top priority. So far, seven of the 19 accused have been arrested,” he said, adding that intelligence agencies are working relentlessly to apprehend the remaining suspects.
Jahangir Alam made it clear that no one will be spared, irrespective of their political affiliations. “Criminals are criminals. No shelter will be given to any criminal, regardless of their political identity.”
He also called on all stakeholders, including the media, to cooperate with the government’s efforts to restore law and order.
Regarding the Mitford case, the Home Adviser said steps have been taken to transfer the case to the Speedy Trial Tribunal to ensure a swift judicial process.
Describing the incident as “a matter of great concern and grief,” he said, “Such violence cannot be tolerated in any civilized society.”
The government is also investigating whether there was any negligence on the part of law enforcement agencies and local administration in handling the case.
In response to questions about preparations for the upcoming general election, Jahangir stated that the law enforcement agencies aim to complete their readiness by December.
He also noted that other stakeholders, including the Election Commission, the administration, and electoral candidates, have their respective roles to play. “The Election Commission will announce the election schedule in due course,” he added.
