Testimony proceedings in three separate corruption cases filed against ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina are scheduled to begin tomorrow in Dhaka.

The cases also involve 47 other accused individuals, including Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and her daughter, Saima Wazed Putul.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has accused Sheikh Hasina of abusing her official power during her tenure by unlawfully allocating government land under the Purbachal New Town Project. Specifically, the charges relate to the illegal allocation of a total of 30 kathas of government land.

The hearings will take place in the courtroom of Judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun at Dhaka’s Special Judge’s Court-5.

The court has issued summons for three key plaintiffs from the ACC—Deputy Director Md Salahuddin, and Assistant Directors Afnan Jannat Keya and SM Rashedul Hasan—to appear and testify in their respective cases.

ACC Public Prosecutor Mir Ahmed Ali Salam confirmed to BSS that all preparations for the testimony proceedings have been completed, and the commission is ready to present its case.

Details of the Three Cases

  • On January 14, ACC Deputy Director Md Salahuddin filed the first case against eight accused individuals, including Sheikh Hasina, alleging abuse of power in the allocation of a 10-katha plot within the Purbachal New Town Project.

  • On January 12, ACC Assistant Director Afnan Jannat Keya filed a separate case against 16 people, including Sheikh Hasina and her daughter Saima Wazed Putul. Subsequently, the commission filed a charge sheet naming 18 accused in this case.

  • On March 10, ACC Assistant Director SM Rashedul Hasan submitted charge sheets for another case involving 15 accused individuals, including Sheikh Hasina and her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy. The charge sheet in this case eventually listed 17 accused.

The ACC’s investigation alleges that the accused misused their authority to illegally allocate valuable government land intended for the Purbachal New Town Project, a major urban development initiative aimed at expanding Dhaka’s residential areas.

The outcome of these testimonies could have significant political ramifications, given Sheikh Hasina’s prominent role in Bangladesh’s recent political history.
