Local leaders of Ganosamhati Andolon (GA) Rangpur branch have expressed profound sorrow over the death of renowned writer, researcher, historian, and intellectual Badruddin Umar, hailing him as a lifelong fighter for the people’s liberation.

Rangpur district convener Touhidur Rahman and member-secretary Mufakhkharul Islam Moon, in a press release, extended their heartfelt condolences to Umar’s bereaved family and paid tribute to his extraordinary contributions to Bangladesh’s progressive movement.

The release noted that the passing of Badruddin Umar (December 20, 1931 – September 7, 2025) is an irreparable loss for the freedom-loving people of Bangladesh, a burden the nation will continue to bear.

Badruddin Umar, widely recognized as one of Bangladesh’s foremost anti-fascist theorists and the architect of mass uprising strategies, served as President of the National Liberation Council. He was among the first to critically identify the politics of the Awami League as fascist.

The GA leaders described Umar as both extraordinary and grounded—a rare figure in the movement for the rights of the Bangladeshi people. Throughout his life, he analyzed historical trends and consistently guided the people’s struggle with clarity and courage. His unwavering commitment to progressive, democratic, and people-centered political action set him apart, and compromise was never part of his approach.

They recalled his collaboration with Sector Commander Colonel Kazi Nuruzzaman in establishing the Anti-Fascist Democratic Committee before 2000, through which he theorized and exposed the fascist tendencies in Awami League politics.

Umar’s fearless honesty distinguished him from so-called progressive intellectuals who often sought safety within the shadow of fascism. He consistently refused to subordinate the class struggle to the fight against fundamentalism and resisted engaging in divisive politics.

In every aspect of his life and work, Badruddin Umar remained a principled guide for generations, leaving behind a legacy of intellectual rigor, courage, and unwavering commitment to the people’s cause.
