The Awami League office at Chattogram New Market has reportedly been vandalised and padlocked.
Police and witnesses said a group of men stormed the fourth-floor office at Dost Building after 2pm on Tuesday, vandalised it and locked the door from outside.
Abdul Karim, chief of Kotwali Police, said: “We heard at night that an office at Dost Building was vandalised. Until 9pm, no one filed a complaint. We have sent a mobile team to the scene.”
The vandalised office belongs to the Awami League’s Chattogram North district unit. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, showing a group of men smashing a portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman near the office.
In the video, Arif Moinuddin, joint coordinator of the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) Chattogram unit, is seen among the crowd.
Arif told bdnews24.com, “We were informed that banned members of the Awami League and its student wing were running night operations there. When we went, we found proof -- everything inside was neatly arranged, tables, chairs, even betel nut tins. So, we locked the place.”
After the fall of the Awami League government on Aug 5 last year, the district office was previously vandalised by angry protesters.
