No Caretaker Government Until July Charter Fulfilled, Declares Nahid

The formation of a caretaker government before the implementation of the July Charter is not feasible, said National Citizen Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam, a key leader of the July Movement 2024 that demanded political reforms and a fair electoral process.

Speaking on Wednesday after a meeting with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna, Nahid stressed that if anyone intends to implement the Charter before a public referendum, the Election Commission (EC) must also be “reconstituted according to the law of the July Charter or the consensus therein.”

“Otherwise, the intent of those advocating it falls into question,” he said.

The four-member NCP delegation, led by Nahid Islam, included Sarjis Alam, Samantha Sharmin, and Khalid Saifullah.

Highlighting concerns over the EC’s neutrality, Nahid cited multiple instances where the commission’s actions had raised doubts. “From our registration process to the registration of another party named Jatiya League, the handling of the Shapla symbol, and the position in the Ishraque Hossain case, several decisions by the EC have been inconsistent,” he said.

“We’ve raised these matters with the Chief Adviser. We are concerned that the EC is not acting impartially or transparently as a constitutional institution. Bias towards certain parties and inconsistent conduct are evident,” Nahid added.

He stressed that “for a fair election, a neutral EC is essential. If elections are flawed, the government will bear responsibility. We have conveyed this to the government and believe the commission must be reconstituted immediately.”

Nahid recently commented on Jamaat-e-Islami’s stance on the proportional representation (PR) system, urging all political parties to act responsibly. “While Jamaat has raised concerns about the PR system, they must work constructively within the framework of the July Charter to ensure inclusive participation and prevent electoral disputes,” he said.

As a prominent figure in the July Movement 2024, Nahid Islam has consistently advocated for reforms in election administration, political accountability, and the implementation of the July Charter, which aims to guarantee transparency, neutrality, and public participation in national elections.
