Shrimp enclosures were washed away, and vast crops in the low-lying agricultural lands have been submerged due to continuous heavy rain in Khulna.

Over 100 shrimp enclosures have been washed away and vast areas of cropland submerged in Khulna's Koyra, Dacope, and Paikgachha upazilas following days of relentless rainfall. The downpour has triggered widespread flooding, affecting public offices, educational institutions, homes, and markets across the region, reports BSS.

Local sources said low-lying areas in unions such as Gadaipur, Haridhali, Kapilmuni, and Raduli are experiencing severe waterlogging. Major roads and the central fish market in Paikgachha town have gone under water, crippling daily activities.

In addition to Paikgachha, several unions in Dacope and Koyra are also reeling from waterlogging, with more than 50 shrimp enclosures reportedly washed away along with large swaths of cropland.

Samad Gazi, a farmer from Gadaipur village, said that fruit nurseries and saplings have been destroyed, and fields of aman paddy and vegetables are now underwater, raising concerns over significant agricultural losses this season.

Many residents blamed the worsening situation on inadequate drainage systems, clogged culverts, and filled-up canals.

According to data from the Department of Fisheries (DoF) and the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Khulna, over 3,000 shrimp enclosures and 1,000 ponds have been inundated, while more than 200 hectares of cropland — including aman seedbeds — have been damaged. The estimated loss stands at approximately Tk 4.5 crore.

Senior Fisheries Officer of Paikgachha, Saikat Mallik, said 2,850 shrimp enclosures and over 900 ponds have been flooded in the upazila. Crop damage includes 82 hectares of aman seedbeds, 115 hectares of vegetables, 18 hectares of green chili, and 2 hectares of off-season watermelon.

Paikgachha Upazila Agriculture Officer Ekramul Hossain confirmed the extent of damage to seedbeds and vegetable fields.

Paikgachha UNO Mahera Nazneen said all sluice gates have been opened, and efforts are underway to clear blocked drains to reduce waterlogging.

Koyra UNO Ruli Biswas said local authorities have been informed about the damage to shrimp farms and croplands and are assessing the situation.

Meanwhile, the persistent rainfall has brought civic life to a standstill in Khulna city, flooding most roads and low-lying areas. Homes and shops have been inundated, causing widespread suffering.

Senior Meteorologist Amirul Azad of the Khulna Meteorological Office said the region received 138mm of rainfall between 6 am Tuesday and 6 pm Wednesday, due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
