Over 34,000 Affected by Feni Floods; Evacuees Start Returning Home

More than 34,600 people have been affected by flooding across five upazilas in Feni, according to local authorities.

As water levels begin to recede in some areas, many displaced residents have started returning home from temporary shelters. By Friday evening, flooding had impacted five of the district’s six upazilas.

Despite the gradual improvement, floodwaters are still flowing over key roads connecting three upazilas. The movement of small vehicles on the Feni–Parshuram road remains suspended for the fourth consecutive day due to persistent inundation.

While parts of Parshuram are beginning to dry out, large areas of Fulgazi remain submerged. Many residents there are still trapped in waist-deep water.

The district and upazila administrations have been distributing food at relief centres. However, some victims have reported that aid has not reached them.

Nur Nabi, a tea stall owner in Fulgazi, said his tin-shed home, recently upgraded with a loan from an NGO, collapsed in the flood. “Everything has been destroyed,” he said.

Jahanara Begum, a woman in her 60s, said floodwaters from a collapsed embankment inundated her house. She and her elderly husband spent Friday afternoon trying to salvage whatever they could from the wreckage.

In a tragic incident, 62-year-old Nurul Alam from Fulgazi drowned while fishing in the floodwaters. His body was recovered on Thursday night and buried the following day. Family members said he had gone to retrieve fishing nets he had earlier set and drowned in the process.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Ismail Hossain said flooding has affected 112 villages across five upazilas—67 in Fulgazi, 27 in Parshuram, 15 in Chhagalnaiya, two in Daganbhuiyan, and one in Sadar.

Of the 34,600 people affected, 8,966 individuals from 2,625 families have taken refuge in government shelters, along with 648 livestock.

Feni Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam said the government has allocated Tk 2.35 million in emergency funds to assist those affected. He added that upazila executive officers and local authorities are working round the clock to manage the response and that the overall situation is gradually improving.
