Fakhrul Blames Trader’s Killing on Collapse of Law and Order

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday condemned the brutal public killing of a scrap trader in Old Dhaka's Mitford area, calling it not just a tragic loss of life, but a glaring example of the country’s deteriorating law and order and failure to protect citizens' rights.

In a strongly worded statement, Fakhrul said, “This heinous act is not merely a personal tragedy—it is a reflection of the serious breakdown in public safety, the rule of law, and the protection of citizens' fundamental rights. It sends shockwaves through a society already suffering from insecurity and impunity.”

The BNP leader emphasised that such violence has no place in BNP's politics. “Barbaric acts like this have no connection with the ideology, values, or political philosophy of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party,” he said.

Fakhrul also noted that the killing occurred in the aftermath of the fall of the "Awami fascist government," referring to the recent change in political leadership following widespread protests in July-August. “This brutal incident, coming after the fall of the Awami League’s authoritarian rule, has shaken the conscience of the nation,” he added.

He warned that unless those responsible are brought to justice through an impartial investigation and given exemplary punishment, the culture of impunity would deepen, pushing society “further into darkness.”

Calling for swift and neutral legal proceedings, Fakhrul urged the interim government to ensure justice by identifying and prosecuting the actual perpetrators without political interference. “No criminal should be above the law, regardless of their affiliation,” he asserted.

He also extended his condolences to the family of the victim, Mohammad Sohag, and prayed for the salvation of his soul.

Party Wings Expel Five Over Alleged Involvement

The BNP’s affiliated organisations—Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal, and Swechchhasebak Dal—have taken disciplinary action against five of their members accused of involvement in the killing.

In separate statements issued Friday night, the three wings announced the permanent expulsion of the following individuals:

  • Razzab Ali (Pintu), former Assistant Secretary for Climate Affairs of Jubo Dal

  • Sabah Karim (Lucky), Joint Convenor of Jubo Dal’s Dhaka South City unit

  • Apu Das, Member Secretary of Chawkbazar Thana unit of Chhatra Dal

  • Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, Chhatra Dal leader

  • Kalu, activist of Swechchhasebak Dal

The expulsions follow widespread public anger over the gruesome murder, which was captured on video and circulated widely on social media.

Background: A Killing That Shocked the Nation

On Wednesday, Md Sohag, also known as Lal Chand, was attacked and killed in broad daylight near Gate No. 3 of Mitford Hospital. His assailants, reportedly former associates involved in a dispute over control of a used cable trade syndicate, fatally beat him with a concrete boulder. He died on the spot.

Police have since arrested four individuals in connection with the murder, including Mahmudul Hasan Mohin and Tarek Rahman Robin. A Dhaka court has granted five days of remand for the two prime suspects. Police say the killing was rooted in a business rivalry and prior confrontations over warehouse access and trade dominance in the area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed that a murder case has been filed, and CCTV footage has been collected. A foreign-made pistol was also recovered during one of the arrests. Investigations are ongoing to track down the remaining suspects and uncover the full scope of the criminal network involved.
