The government has issued a gazette notification summoning 100 individuals, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and her son Sajib Wazed Joy, to appear before the court to face trial in connection with multiple corruption cases related to the Purbachal New Town Project.
Signed by Senior Special Judge of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Court, Zakir Hossain Galib, the gazette was published on July 3, formally directing all accused to appear before the court on July 20.
Public Prosecutor (PP) of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Mir Ahmed Ali Salam, told BSS that the court had issued an order on July 1 instructing the authorities to publish the gazette notification. If the accused fail to appear on or before the scheduled date, the court will proceed with the trial in their absence, the PP added.
The corruption charges stem from the alleged illegal allocation of multiple 10-katha plots in the Purbachal housing project to influential political figures, primarily members of Sheikh Hasina’s family.
On January 14, ACC Deputy Director Salah Uddin filed a case against eight individuals, including Sheikh Hasina, over the unlawful allocation of a 10-katha plot to herself by abusing her power. A charge sheet naming 12 accused, including the former prime minister, was submitted to the court on March 10 by ACC Assistant Director Afnan Jannat Keya, the investigation officer.
On the same day, the ACC filed another case against 15 people, including Sheikh Hasina and her son Sajib Wazed Joy. The charge sheet in that case, submitted on March 10, lists 17 accused.
On January 13, the ACC lodged another case against 15 individuals, including Sheikh Rehana, Sheikh Hasina, and Rehana’s daughter Tulip Rizwana Siddique, for corrupt practices in acquiring land in Purbachal. The charge sheet submitted on March 10 names 17 accused.
Another case was filed on January 13 against 16 individuals, including Azmina Siddique, her sister Tulip Siddique, and their aunt Sheikh Hasina, on similar charges. The charge sheet, submitted on March 10, lists 18 accused.
Yet another case filed the same day accused 16 people, including Radwan Mujib Siddique, his sister Tulip Siddique, and their aunt Sheikh Hasina, of unlawful land allocation. The charge sheet, submitted on March 10, names 18 accused.
On January 12, the ACC filed a separate case against 16 people, including Saima Wazed Putul and her mother Sheikh Hasina. The charge sheet for this case also lists 18 individuals.
In total, six cases have been filed by the ACC concerning the illegal allotment of land plots in the Purbachal New Town Project. Sixteen individuals have been named as prosecution witnesses across these cases.
