Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called on party leaders and activists to engage closely with the public in preparation for the upcoming national election.
“Get ready for the election. And what does preparation mean? It means winning the people’s trust and affection. We must ensure that the people feel, ‘Yes, we have no alternative but the BNP,’” Fakhrul said, stressing that genuine public support is the foundation of victory. “To achieve this, we must be ready to make sacrifices,” he added.
He made these remarks on Monday afternoon while addressing a doa mahfil and discussion at the Sunrise Community Centre in Sylhet’s Pathantula area. The event was organised by the Sylhet district and city BNP, on the initiative of UK Chapter BNP President MA Malik.
The gathering was held to offer prayers for the late President Ziaur Rahman and for the recovery of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. A discussion session was held alongside the doa mahfil.
The programme was presided over by BNP Chairperson’s Adviser and UK Chapter BNP President MA Malik. BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas was the keynote speaker, while fellow standing committee members Iqbal Hasan Mahmud (Tuku) and AZM Zahid Hossain also addressed the audience as special speakers.
Expressing gratitude to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, Fakhrul said, “He spoke to our leader Tarique Rahman in London and proposed mid-February 2026 as the tentative date for the election.”
He warned against prolonged delays in holding elections: “Let me be clear—whether to the government or other political parties—the longer the election is delayed, the further behind Bangladesh will fall.”
Fakhrul cautioned that continued delays could plunge the country into deeper crisis: “There will be no foreign investment, no domestic investment. Women and girls will become more vulnerable. Mob violence will rise. The judiciary will collapse, and so will law and order. Everything depends on having an elected government—one that commands the people’s support.”
“No government is more powerful than one chosen by the people,” he stated.
Urging party activists to remain disciplined, Fakhrul said, “We must act in a way that no one can accuse us of wrongdoing—be it land grabbing or extortion. We must bring everyone together.”
Reflecting on the recent struggle for democracy, he said, “Many have sacrificed their lives, shed blood, and endured oppression—especially during 2024 and over the past 15 years. Thousands of false cases have been filed against our people. Many of our leaders present here today were imprisoned and brutally tortured by the Hasina regime, some even held in chains.”
He added, “Sheikh Hasina did not flee for nothing. We have emerged from fascism through years of struggle, immense sacrifice, and the tears of many mothers. Now that we are free from authoritarian rule, what comes next? Our fight continues—for democracy. We want to build a democratic Bangladesh, where citizens have rights, can vote freely, and enjoy freedom of speech.”
Posing a rhetorical question, he asked, “Will Bangladesh remain a poor country forever? We want to see the Bangladesh envisioned by the martyred President Ziaur Rahman. We want to realise the dream for which our leader Khaleda Zia travelled from village to village, inspiring the people.”
Among others who spoke at the event were BNP Chairperson’s Advisers Habibur Rahman (Habib) and Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Tahsina Rushdir (Luna), Enamul Haque Chowdhury, Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Central Organising Secretary GK Gaus, Assistant Organising Secretary Miftah Siddiqui, Dhaka District BNP General Secretary Nipun Roy Chowdhury, Sylhet District BNP President Abdul Qayum Chowdhury, and Acting President of Sylhet City BNP Rezaul Hasan Kayes Lodi.
