The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has described a series of attacks following the death of Inqilab Moncho Convenor Sharif Osman bin Hadi as part of a conspiracy to make the parliamentary elections “uncertain”.
The party’s assessment came after incidents of vandalism and arson targeting Prothom Alo, The Daily Star, Chhayanaut, Udichi and other institutions, as well as an attack on the Indian mission in Khulna over the past two days, amid anger and protests triggered by news of Hadi’s death.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir outlined the party’s position at a press conference late Friday night, following a meeting of the party’s National Standing Committee.
“We condemn and express our disgust at these heinous incidents,” Fakhrul said. “They demonstrate that a long-identified group is deliberately pushing the country towards chaos.”
He alleged that the group was attempting to nullify democratic and voting rights, “won through immense bloodshed”, to establish a new version of fascism in the country.
BNP on Friday paid tributes to Inquilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi as his body arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport from Singapore in the evening.
On behalf of the party, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed and Acting Chairman’s adviser Dr Mahdi Amin paid the tributes to Hadi by placing a wreath on his coffin at the airport, said BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan.
Earlier, the duo along with some interim government advisers and senior leader from different parties received the mortal remains of Hadi, who passed away in a Singapore hospital on Thursday.
The Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-585 carrying Hadi’s body landed at 5:48 pm, having departed from Singapore’s Changi International Airport at 2:03 pm, Bangladesh time.
Hadi, a prospective candidate for the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election from the Dhaka-8 constituency, was shot in the head on December 12 while travelling in a rickshaw on Culvert Road in Puratan Paltan, Dhaka.
He initially underwent surgery at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and was later admitted to Evercare Hospital. For advanced treatment, he was airlifted to Singapore, where he passed away on Thursday night.
